John Henry Irons, known as Steel, first appeared in Superman Vol. 2 #0 (October 1994) after Superman's supposed death.
Irons, a brilliant weapons engineer, was disgusted by the destructive creations he helped design and left his job. Moved by Superman's sacrifice and inspired by his legacy, Irons fashioned a suit of armor incorporating advanced technology.
Adopting the alias "Man of Steel" and wielding a sledgehammer, Irons fought crime and protected Metropolis. He became a valued ally to Superman upon his return, eventually earning the hero's respect and the shorter, more memorable moniker "Steel".
